The Maitlands – When It Rains, It Pours original review

The new Maitlands single, ‘When it rains, it pours’ sounds like a penny falls arcade machine that has escaped the north pier in Blackpool, gone on the big dipper, then spunked it’s hard monetary load over an unsuspecting, but happy crowd of holidaymakers.

Thematically, ‘When It Rains, It Pours’ is a song that captures the visual aggression of the British seafront. Down at heels boarding houses owned by down at heels ladies with stern faces. Facades with large, single glazed windows that overlook an angry sea. Slush puppy machines and wet boardwalks.

It’s two songs welded together, one  with it’s sub metal riff; a set of bruising, pugilistic jabs, that steps into the ring like an old pro that’s seen and given too much damage. Punches honed by hard work and whisky, and long drives in Volvo’s to Sheffield.

Meanwhile there is another song based around guitar fireworks, which isnt a million miles away from ‘View To A Kill’, believe or not.

In all, this song is like an early 60s British black ‘n’ white movie on Talking Pictures in the afternoon, a kitchen sink-er with Reed or Harris. Then imagine the musics been done by a 70s metal band you’ve never heard of, but a guy at work loves.
